A Relationship Renewed

Last year, after 10 years of designing annual reports for a large organization, the new communications director simply wasn’t interested in using our services, and we suddenly found ourselves with one less account. This wasn’t due to poor design, we consistently delivered a well-designed product that fit the client’s brand. Unfortunately, politics and design don’t mix. I explained to our designers that when there’s a regime change, it’s my job to persuade the new management to retain us, but sometimes the relationship ends. It’s part of the normal cycle of doing business.

6 months later, I received a phone call from the previous director. She’d returned to the organization, resuming her post as communications director, and asked us if we’d be interested in designing and printing the 2011 annual report. “Yes, of course!” I was ecstatic. It felt as if a dear, old friend had returned. And I was gratified to know that we’d be resuming our 12-year relationship with the organization.

So, which is more important: relationships or good design? Both, but all things being equal, relationships matter most. I have one business relationship that began 26 years ago when I first opened my doors. That contact has opened up so many design opportunities for me that I cannot begin to thank this person enough. Because of her, I was able to design a successful corporate identity for one of Hawaii’s landmark companies, and have continued to work with them ever since. Throughout the many years we’ve known each other, she has always provided opportunities for my company wherever she has been, a kindness I will always remember and appreciate.

Relationships that we develop are ultimately based on comfort level and mutual respect, and it’s always rewarding when they can be productive and enduring.
